PREP Automates Authoring of Alternate Text for Mathematical Formulae
New Feature Update: We are delighted to announce the launch of a new feature ‘Math Alt’ in our advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-driven PDF and Document Remediation Platform PREP. The Math Alt feature automates the authoring of alternate text for mathematical formulae.
This feature also leverages Continual Engine’s unique product Invicta™. Invicta™ is our transformative platform which utilizes advanced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques like deep learning and computer vision, to automate the authoring of accurate high quality alternative text for statistical, mathematical, and other diverse sets of images.

Equivalent Text Alternatives for Images: The Criticality

The PDF/UA accessibility guidelines mandate that any mathematical formulae, charts, graphs, diagrams, or images in a digital document, should be accurately tagged with a formula tag and must have an alt attribute assigned to it.
“Any non-text element (images, charts, graphs, infographics, logos, etc.) must have corresponding alternative text.”

Math Digital Documents: Making Remediation Effortless

Providing equitable access to high quality learning resources is fundamental to student success. Amongst all STEM subjects, Mathematics has possibly the most non-text elements like formulae and equations, making it difficult to remediate the subject’s digital documents and denying access to many.
Additionally, manual authoring of alternate text for complex mathematical subject matter during the remediation process, is an extremely challenging and time-consuming task. It requires subject matter experts (SMEs) to be in the loop during the process, to ensure accurate contextual value of the subject. This is where PREP’s new feature helps. The product’s AI-approach accelerates remediation of Math subject matter by automating it, at the same time making the process faster, simpler and highly accurate.
Here are a few examples of alternate text derived for math equations and diagrams –

Example 1

maths equation

Short Description:

The figure illustrates a math equation.

Long Description:

f open parenthesis “a” close parenthesis equals StartFraction 1 over 2 pi i EndFraction times contour-integral StartFraction f open parenthesis z close parenthesis over z minus “a” EndFraction d z.

Example 2

maths equation

Short Description:

The figure illustrates a math equation.

Long Description:

Open parenthesis nabla subscript uppercase X Baseline Y close parenthesis raised to the k power equals uppercase X raised to the i power times open parenthesis nabla subscript i BaseLine Y close parenthesis raised to the k power equals uppercase X raised to the i power times open parenthesis StartFraction partial differential Y raised to the k power over partial differential lowercase x raised to the i power EndFraction plus uppercase Gamma subscript i m BaseLine raised to the k power times Y raised to the m power close parenthesis.
